Mayor Nancy Peckford Calls For End Of Gender Stereotypes On International Women’s Day

The Mayor of North Grenville is sharing her thoughts on International Women’s Day, and what it means to her.

In a statement, Mayor Nancy Peckford applauded the incredibly bright, strong and fierce women who make up North Grenville, and shared her own perspective on how we can create a more inclusive society.

As a mother of three kids, all in school, she says it’s up to everyone to promote an environment that ensures gender is not a barrier for anyone.

“My son for example is a deeply feeling human and sometimes I’ve seen him shut down for that,” Peckford said. “I’ve seen my daughters be very ambitious and outspoken and they’ve been shut down for that. I think it’s about ensuring that no one is constricted  by gender stereotypes.”

While it’s vital to recognize the contributions of women, Peckford says the day is also about ensuring men are not constrained by rigid stereotypes.

As a female leader, she’s always looked at ways to empower people of all ages, gender, and backgrounds to help them reach their full potential.

For the Mayor, the fight for equality and gender parity starts with being caring and compassionate.

“You really care and you want to make change,” Peckford said. “You see things from a perspective that other people don’t and that’s what gives you energy to get up every day. That’s what gives you the appetite and capacity to hear from others, and to understand and bring empathy to all sorts of situations.”

Peckford adds that ultimately, people should feel empowered to do what they want to do and be who they want to be.
