OPP sharing suggestions for a safe Halloween evening

If you plan on trick-treating this year, the OPP is sharing tips once again to have a safe evening.

Constable Erin Cranton says they always suggest wearing bright colours.

“If you are wearing a dark coloured costume, carry a flashlight, wear reflectors if you can or have reflective tape on the costume. Costumes should fit properly to prevent falls and trips, nothing oversized with shoes or long dresses or capes that are dragging along.”

Cranton also says they suggest not criss-crossing on busy roads or streets, people should stick to one side and walk on the sidewalk if possible. Children should also travel with a parent or adult.

The OPP also suggests parents double check any treats, only visit homes that are well lit, never go inside a strangers home and always dress for the weather.

For drivers on Halloween night, Cranton says to slow down in residential areas, reduce distractions and make sure to stay alert for trick-or-treaters.

Cranton adds the OPP strongly recommends that people abide by the recommendations of local health officials when it comes to public activities.
