Food bank use up 30%

The House of Lazarus (HOL) Food Bank is reporting a dramatic increase in users.

The number of people accessing the food bank has grown by 30% in the past two weeks, according to Executive Director Cathy Ashby.

The charity, located in Mountain, has made some changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The food bank is currently open Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Non-perishable food hampers are being handed out, along with fresh produce, eggs, milk, bread and meat.

Operation Backpack, which provides at-risk students with food during the weekends, continues to run. With the schools closed, recipients can pick up their bags at either the HOL or the South Dundas Municipal Centre in Morrisburg on Fridays, between 9:00am and 2:00pm.

Families in need are encouraged to contact the HOL directly by calling 613-989-3830 during food bank hours.

“We are thankful that the community continues to support us so that we can help those in need,” noted Ashby.
