Bubble gum blowing contest nets $272 for children’s charity

The students at Oxford-on-Rideau Public School and Merrickville Public School teamed up to raise money for the Champions for Kids (C4K) Foundation. The two schools hosted bubble gum blowing contests last week.

Gum Chewing Licenses were sold by donation at both schools, netting $272.50 for the charity. The students at each school practiced bubble blowing during the day and then came together in an assembly for the contest. Students were divided into age categories and the student who blew the largest, roundest bubble in each group won the contest.

The Upper Canada District School Board mascot, T.U.S.K. (Teaching Unconditional Support and Kindness), was the judge at both schools.

Champions for Kids is a charity that helps level the playing field for UCDSB children and their families. Funds assist families in different aspects, from paying for extracurricular activities to eyeglasses.

The UCDSB says the greater theme of the assembly was the importance of showing kindness and how small actions can make a big difference. The board noted the contest gave students an opportunity to help their peers and the money raised is enough to send a child to summer camp, pay for new winter boots and other things the C4K provides funding for.
