Libraries and health agencies across Leeds and Grenville have partnered on a new initiative. The Get a Grip program launched last month. The goal is to keep people on their feet by providing boot grippers for free to people over the age of 65.

Vicki Stevenson, CEO of the Rideau Lakes Public Library, says the libraries are the distribution points. She noted 200 pairs of ice cleats were sent out to all 13 main library branches in Leeds and Grenville, including North Grenville and Merrickville. Stevenson explained the idea came from Lanark County, which runs a similar program.

People under the age of 65 can also purchase the cleats at a reduced rate of $25. The money is then put back into the program.

Stevenson says all the cleats have been handed out, but the committee is seeking funding to purchase a second batch this winter. She noted the plan is to grow the program annually until the need is met.

People can donate to the Get a Grip program at their local library. For more information, contact Stevenson directly by emailing [email protected]
