Veteran Owen Fitzgerald speaks about the history and future of North Grenville cenotaph

Hundreds of locals and visitors gathered around the cenotaph on the front lawn of the old North Grenville District High School on November 11th. Korean War veteran Owen Fitzgerald said he feels now that the school is closed, the cenotaph should be moved to Veteran’s Way, a tree-lined lane in The Ferguson Forest Centre dedicated to the memory of local members of the Canadian Forces.

The statue of the soldier is inscribed with names of local soldiers lost in battle. Fitzgerald spoke to Juice FM about the history of our local war monument.

Fitzgerald says if moved to Veterans’ Way the symbolic statue, which was originally installed at the old post office and is now on the front lawn of the old high school, should never have to move again.

A group of local women raised the funds to build the cenotaph in 1922.
