Kemptville Horticultural Society marks 120th anniversary

A local club hit a major milestone. The Kemptville Horticultural Society (KHS) marked its 120th anniversary last week. The group was founded in 1899.

President Arline Rutter says there are currently 65 members, including three lifetime members who have been with the club for 25 years or more. One member, Barb Frew, is celebrating 37 years with the KHS.

Rutter noted the club is very involved in public planting and currently tends the flowerbeds at Rotary Park. She explained the KHS used to take care of the plants at the post office and three local libraries (Kemptville, South Gower and Oxford Mills) before the branches were amalgamated.

Rutter says the KHS also helps out with Hey Day by running the plant sale, which brings in money for the hospital. She noted the club’s mandate is to maintain public spaces and attract younger members. Rutter explained the KHS hands out bursaries to students studying horticulture, forestry or agriculture.

The KHS meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the Kemptville Pentecostal Church. The meetings are open to anyone and new members are welcome.
