Brewed Awakenings raising money, awareness for Huntington’s

Brewed Awakenings is offering any size coffee or tea for $2 on Thursday, with all proceeds going to the Huntington Society of Canada. Huntington’s disease (HD) is a genetic disorder that kills brain cells, impacting physical, cognitive and emotional responses.

Owner Kika Smith says it runs in her family. She noted two of her three children were tested for the Huntington gene and one of her daughters has the disease. Each child of a parent with HD has a 50% chance of inheriting it. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of 35 and 55.

Smith explained researchers are making huge strides towards finding a cure since identifying the gene that causes HD. She says just in the last year, there have been trials done that halted the progress of the disease in mice.

Smith’s family has participated in the Toronto Huntington Heroes Run for the past 11 years, raising thousands for the cause.
