Study shows more first-time food bank users than ever before, across Canada

More than 840-thousand Canadians used a Food Bank in one month. Food Banks Canada has called the number alarming. 12 per cent of food bank users have jobs, and a third of food bank users are children. Food banks are seeing more new customers than ever before. Pauline Pratt of the House of Lazarus in Mountain spoke to JuiceFM about the high demand.

Pratt attributes the increased demand to jobs that aren’t paying enough to cover the cost of living, combined with the cost of commuting and heating a home. Even in a time of financial difficulty, however, Pratt says the community continues to be generous with their donations. You can give to the House of Lazarus Food Bank through the donation bin at Jonsson’s Independent Grocer.
