Local girl wins volunteer award, sells horse treats for charity

Kacey Caines won the Youth Volunteer Caring Award, through the Volunteer Centre of St. Lawrence-Rideau. The 15-year-old was nominated for her fundraising efforts in support of the Merrickville Food Cupboard. Caines, a North Grenville District High School student, was presented the award on April 10.

She has been raising money for the food bank for the past four years, by making wreaths and sock snowmen during the holiday season.

Caines says even though Merrickville is a small town, there are still many people who depend on the Food Cupboard. She says she loves having more than enough food to eat on Christmas day and it’s not fair that others don’t.

Caines launched her own horse treat business, called Belle’s Favourites, to bring in additional dollars for the food bank. The treats are made with carrots, apples, oats and molasses or honey.

She says she’s in the process of setting up a website, but people can order the all-natural treatments through Facebook or Instagram.
