The Municipality of North Grenville is running a new pilot project to find out how effective composting is for waste diversion. The plan is to host information sessions starting in May and offer free backyard composters to residents who attend.

Councillor Kristin Strackerjan says the idea came up during a discussion forum. She says the intent is to be able to monitor the program over the next six months to see what real results come out of it.

Details are still being ironed out, but the pilot project will run for a fixed amount of time with a limited number of composters.

Strackerjan says the municipality will follow-up with participants and gather information. She says hopefully the residents will see a 50 per cent reduction in waste.
