Local group hosting first Seedy Saturday, aims to establish seed bank

Seedy Saturday is coming to town. Kemptville Gardeners, a new Facebook group, is hosting the event on April 27. It’s being held at the North Grenville Public Library from 11:00am to 3:00pm. There is no cost to attend and everyone in the community is welcome to drop by.

Seedy Saturday is being organized by Emily Kelly, Samantha Macuzzi, Denise Mahoney and Susanne Larner. The event will feature seed and seedling swaps, gardening information, kids’ craft table and refreshments.

Kelly says the goal is to establish a seed bank for the North Grenville area. She says it could be housed at the municipal centre or library. Kelly says people would be able to drop off seeds and pick them up as needed.

She says there’s a lot of concern that plant varieties are dying off and a seed bank is one way to protect diversity. Kelly says if there are people in the community with rare plants, organizers would love to see them out at the event.

Tables are still open for people who want to take part in Seedy Saturday. The group is looking for garlic growers and beekeepers.

Kemptville Seedy Saturday could become an annual event. For more information, check out Kemptville Gardeners on Facebook or Instagram.
