Crosswalk for Concession Road

WSP Consulting presented traffic calming measures for Concession Road to North Grenville Council. Recommendations include a crosswalk at Campus Drive, lane markings to visually narrow the lanes, speed limits painted on the lanes and center line delineators.

The total cost is $50,000. The posted speed limit on Concession is 40 kilometers per hour, but the average speed is 60 kilometers per hour. Concession is a community safety zone, with two schools, daycare and hospital.

Councillor Doreen O’Sullivan questioned the timing of pedestrian counts, which determined the type of crosswalk recommended. She says there are not a lot of people crossing the road in November. O’Sullivan says if WSP took the count in May or June, the numbers would paint a different picture.

The crosswalk proposed is a pedestrian crossing with streetlights. O’Sullivan, along with other members of council, want to see that enhanced to an illuminated crosswalk with push button. The cost of the recommended crosswalk is $18,000. The upgrade would total around $42,000.

Director of Public Works Karen Dunlop advised council that the best way to move forward is to accept the report, with the direction to revisit the crosswalk prior to tendering the project. She says the department will bring back an administrative report about the upgraded crosswalk.

The matter will be brought back to council in June.
