MP reacts to shootings in Parliament buildings

Carol Hughes, a Northern Ontario MP just finished asking a question during an NDP caucus meeting when the shooting on Parliament Hill began this morning. Hughes says some colleagues hid under tables and adds the experience was very emotional. Hughes is now in lockdown off the Hill at her MP office on Sparks Street a block away from Parliament Hill.

She says it’s concerning that a person got into Parliament with a weapon and expects there will be an investigation into how this happened. But she adds in the end the House of Commons still needs to be accessible to the public. Hughes says it’s fortunate that Parliament Hill has the security it does because she firmly believes the outcome could have been a lot worse.
