Historical first: female majority at council table

North Grenville can celebrate another first. When Nancy Peckford was elected on October 22, she became the first female mayor in North Grenville. The swearing-in of Councillor Kristin Strackerjan last night marks a female majority at the council table.

This is a first time in the community’s history, dating back pre-amalgamation, according to Clerk Cahl Pominville.

Strackerjan says she likes seeing diversity, including the age range of council members and different backgrounds. She says all those factors matter just as much as gender equality.

Strackerjan took the oath of office during the swearing-in ceremony and was appointed council liaison for the Kemptville College Foundation, Kemptville District Hospital Board and Emergency Management.

Peckford says all five members of council offer unique perspectives.

Strackerjan will now commence official duties. She was appointed following the resignation of Craig McCormick on January 22.
