Community rallies around 8-year-old diagnosed with leukemia

Navin Maharaj has three years of treatments ahead of him. The 8-year-old Kemptville Public Student was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on June 24. Community members are planning a fundraiser for Maharaj. The event is set for August 11 from 8:00am to 1:00pm at South Gower Park. Organizer and family friend Tasha Van Dasselaar says Navin wasn’t feeling well for a few weeks.

He was rushed to CHEO by ambulance and given the official diagnosis. Van Dasselaar, along with other organizers Sharni Wilkes and Heather Lebeau, are hoping people will bring garage sale items to sell in support of Navin. Participants can set up their own table to sell things or just drop off items. There will also be a BBQ and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Maharaj family to cover costs like travel and parking. Van Dasselaar says his treatments have already started.

A GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign has been launched for the family. To donate, click here. For more details, check out the Navin’s ALL Fight event page on Facebook. To participate in the event, contact Van Dasselaar by calling 613-794-1300.
