Southgate Community Church still plans on building an outdoor rink for the community. Southgate was in talks with the Ottawa Senators Foundation to build a Sens rink, which was supposed to open winter 2018. Southgate is holding a breakfast on May 24 to meet with community partners and representatives from the Sens to figure out how to move forward on the rink project. Pastor Ben Last says many local businesses will be at the breakfast.
The goal is to get in-kind donations from community partners to start construction. Southgate is putting in a new parking lot this fall and hopes to lay the concrete pad for the rink at the same time. Last says Southgate will take a leadership role.
The NHL Players’ Association has committed $50,000 towards the new rink. The total cost of the project is estimated at $300,000.
