A second refugee family is on its way to Kemptville. The Refugees in North Grenville (RING) group is getting ready for the second family they have sponsored in two years. The first family, from Syria, arrived back in September 2016. The second family – a couple and their three young children – is coming from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. RING member Ken Gehrels says that due to a change in policy, the family will be slapped with a $10,000 refugee transportation bill as soon as they land.
The group is hoping the community will come together and help cover the cost of transportation. Gehrels says the group’s goal in sponsoring refugee families is to give them a chance at a good life here in Canada.
To date, the community has contributed about $60,000 towards RING’s efforts. The second family is set to arrive on May 29. For more information or to donate, visit refugeesng.ca.
