Former classmates of NGDHS student John Maguire were shocked to hear this week that he is now under investigation by the RCMP as an Islamic extremist in Syria. Maguire has made no secret of his new belief system, writing online under the name Yahya Maguire that Canada was “evil” and that he looks forward to “the reward of jihad” and “the opportunity for martyrdom.” The 23-year-old former hockey star is now one of dozens of Canadians under RCMP investigation after making his way to Syria, allegedly to join an extremist faction like ISIS.
