The OPP have announced an innovative approach to detecting distracted drivers.
‘Operation Safe Trucking’ kicked off today with an announcement at OPP headquarters. The initiative is targeting distracted transport truck drivers and will see officers conducting their patrols in transport trucks. According to the OPP their officers will be able to use the improved vantage point to spot commercial motor vehicle operators that are driving distracted or engaging in some other kind of dangerous behavior behind the wheel.
The strategy is going to last five days and is just the latest initiative to support the CMV Mitigation Strategy. Targeted behavior includes distracted, aggressive and impaired driving, as well as speeding, following too closely, occupant restraint and hours of service violations.
The announcement comes just days after OPP Inspector Paul Bedard and Provincial Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca met with local representatives, including Prescott Mayor Brett Todd, to discuss ways to make the 401 safer.
