Yet another scam operating in the area

The Brockville Police have another message to the public about scams.

According to police a Brockville senior is the latest victim of a lottery scam that is targeting the area. The victim reported to police he had been asked on a few occasions to send money to a bank account in British Columbia in order to claim lottery winnings. The most recent request caused him to become suspicious and contact police. Police say the man never received a prize and the money he transferred is lost.

Police want to remind the public that scammers come up with new and inventive plans to prey on their potential victims. They will often use the name of real companies, or in this case lottery, to convince people that their ruse is legitimate. Police say known lottery and sweepstakes companies don’t request money upfront to claim prize winnings and you never need to “pay to play”.

Police are withholding the amount of money lost because it may be evidence in a later investigation and they don’t want to make the victim a target again.
