OPP continue to educate residents on major scams

The OPP continues to educate people during Fraud Prevention Month.

The OPP is running an awareness campaign to protect residents.

The latest information is in regards to the “Grandparent Scam”. The way it works, according to the OPP, is that a victim will receive a frantic phone call from someone claiming to be a grandchild or loved one. The caller says they’re involved in some sort of mishap or are in an emergency and need money right away.

The OPP says people should be wary of any requests for money over the phone. It says there are certain warning signs such as making the request sound urgent, using fear, secrecy and a request for money transfer during the call.

If you think someone’s been a victim, you can file a complaint through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website.
