The Special Investigations Unit has laid charges, including manslaughter, against an Ottawa Police officer in the death of Abdirahman Abdi.

A 36-year-old Ottawa constable will face a charge of manslaughter, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Abdi died last summer when officers were called to respond to an incident on July 24th. The SIU says it happened around the area of Wellington Street West and Fairmont Avenue. Some interaction took place between 37-year-old Abdi and officers on Hilda Street and he went into medical distress. He died the next day.

The Ottawa constable will face the charges in court at the end of March.
