St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival a boost to local economy

The popular St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival generated $1.5 million in Leeds Grenville in 2013, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s Regional Economic Impact Model. More than 6,000 people attended the summer performances. The 2014 season is expected to be even more successful as it has gained international attention as the only Canadian stop of London’s Globe Theatre production of Hamlet. As Artistic Director Ian Farthing explains, the media attention for the Globe event is having quite an impact.

The two sold-out performances will boost the local festival’s economic impact by $388,465 in just one day.

The two feature plays at the waterfront amphitheatre this year are The Tempest and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, running from July 12 to August 16. Visit www.stlawrenceshakespeare.ca for more information.
