Chesterville mom petitions government over demonstration schools

A Chesterville woman is speaking out against the Wynne government’s decision to stop accepting applications for demonstration schools. Laurie Forrester’s son is in Grade 6 but because of his phonological dyslexia, he reads at a Grade 2 level. She says these demonstration schools are the last resort for many deaf or learning disabled students to learn essential skills.

Forrester says she was told the schools are not at full capacity, so a review will be conducted. It took her a year to get through the application process so that her son would be considered for entry into a boarding demonstration school in Belleville. Now that there is a stop on applications, she is wondering how he will get the educational support that he needs.

Stormont, Dundas & South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonnell has created a petition asking the government to immediately reinstate funding streams for demonstration schools and to ensure every student is allowed the chance to receive an education and achieve their full potential. That petition is being presented at Queen’s Park this week.
