Matt Ovenden places second in Canada at CrossFit Open

In his first foray at the CrossFit Open, Matt Ovenden placed second in Canada and 39th in the world in his age category. The 15-year-old North Grenville District High School student says he took up CrossFit a year ago.

He explained he got into it to improve his game on the soccer field. Ovenden says CrossFit turned into his second sport and he loves competing.

The CrossFit Open took place over a five week period, ending earlier this month. Each athlete completes one workout per week and scores are sent in for the competition.

Ovenden trains at CrossFit Kemptville, where he is coached by owner Devin Eaton. He noted he trains Monday to Friday, for two hours per day.

Ovenden will take part in the online age qualifier for the CrossFit Games sometime in early 2020. He says only the top 10 in the world in each category move on to the games.
