North Grenville’s Official Plan is Getting Some Minor Changes https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/23418/news/north-grenvilles-official-plan-is-getting-some-minor-changes/ Mon, 23 Apr 2018 11:12:02 +0000 http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=23418

Staff are making some last minute changes to North Grenville’s Official Plan (OP). About 40 minor revisions and clarifications were discussed during committee of the whole last Monday. Director of Planning and Development, Phil Gerrard, says there are two main issues holding back the final draft.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/OP-revisions-1-1.mp3"][/audio]

The only way for the development to proceed is as a rural residential subdivision. The other issue was the definition of water resources, which included municipal drains. Gerrard says the conservation authority was not happy about it.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/OP-revisions-2-1.mp3"][/audio]

The OP will be brought back to the committee on May 7 with the final revisions. Council should be going forward with the adoption of the OP on May 14.

Pitch-In North Grenville Week Started Yesterday https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/23417/news/pitch-in-north-grenville-week-started-yesterday/ Mon, 23 Apr 2018 11:07:59 +0000 http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=23417

Help make the community beautiful this spring by picking up trash. Pitch-In North Grenville week kicks off April 22 - just in time for Earth Day. Cheryl Fequet, public works clerk, says the annual initiative helps the environment.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Pitch-In-Week-2-1.mp3"][/audio]

Individuals, families, neighbourhoods, community groups and schools can register to clean up public spaces. Residents who want to take part can stop by the municipal centre to pick up free bags. Parks, walking trails and side roads in the country are littered with garbage every spring. Fequet says the process is as simple as putting your own trash out at the curb.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Pitch-In-Week-1-1.mp3"][/audio]

The weekly limit of 10 bags at the curb still applies, but if you have more than 10 bags call Fequet directly at 613-258-9569 (ext. 133) and pick up can be arranged. For more information, visit northgrenville.ca.

Students and staff at École catholique Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys are celebrating Earth Day in style. On Friday, the French Catholic school in Kemptville hosted the UNI-VERT Student Earth Summit. Anouk Tremblay, CECCE Trustee, says the summit was the first of its kind for the board.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Earth-Day-CECCE-1-1.mp3"][/audio]

Students from across the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) school board took part in the summit. Speakers gave the students insight into environmentally sustainable practices. Tremblay says the summit shows students ways to make positive impacts.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Earth-Day-CECCE-2-1.mp3"][/audio]

The CECCE made the move to become carbon neutral last year. The schools across the board are coming together to make it a reality. Most CECCE schools recycle, compost and use solar panels. The summit gave new ideas on reaching the board’s goal.

Kemptville District Hospital is Taking Part in National Volunteer Week https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/23276/news/kemptville-district-hospital-is-taking-part-in-national-volunteer-week/ Mon, 16 Apr 2018 11:56:57 +0000 http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=23276

Kemptville District Hospital staff are doing their part to acknowledge National Volunteer Week.

Volunteers are unpaid but they can be crucial to some of our most important institutions. Hospital CEO Frank Vassallo says without the volunteers in the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation and Kemptville District Auxiliary things would be different.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Vassallo1.mp3"][/audio]

According to Vassallo the Auxillary has donated $65,000 the last two years and well over a million in their history. He notes that the funding they receive from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is greatly appreciated but without fundraising they would be short of what they need.

Vassallo points out if you go to the hospital you’ll see red-vest wearing volunteers helping throughout the building. He estimates they put in hundreds or thousands of hours annually as a group and looks forward to the recognition tea they host every year.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Vassallo2.mp3"][/audio]

He notes that he hears from patients and families weekly how wonderful their volunteers are. Vassallo finished by saying the community at large is a key ingredient in what makes their hospital successful because they attend and donate to fundraisers.

The Region’s Largest Business Retention and Expansion Program Has Grown https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/23223/uncategorized/the-regions-largest-business-retention-and-expansion-program-has-grown/ Fri, 13 Apr 2018 12:13:36 +0000 http://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=23223

The biggest Business Retention and Expansion program in the region’s history just got a little bit larger.

Economic Development Manager with the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Ann Weir says earlier this week the communities of Augusta, Merrickville-Wolford and Rideau Lakes launched BR+E programs. According to Weir all three communities will be working with the United Counties to create four surveys, one from each community and one from the counties.

Business Retention Officer with the United Counties Krista George says their goal is to assist businesses that are already heavily invested in the community to flourish and expand. Businesses will be contacted and asked to complete a survey about their concerns and needs; these results will then be reviewed so local governments have a better understanding of what enterprise in the area needs. Weir says they want to be sure businesses in the area can grow while remaining in our community.

According to Weir they are planning to contact over 300 businesses right now but interested parties are encouraged to reach out and ask to be surveyed. Business owners who would like to take part can do so by contacting George at 613-342-3840 extension 5368 or via email at krista.george@uclg.on.ca.

The Pop-Up Shop trend continues in downtown Kemptville.

Compassionate Support for Stressful Times is the second business to receive support from the Old Town Kemptville Business Improvement Area through the Pop-Up Shop Program. Shulamit Ber Levtov is moving her business to Prescott Street and taking advantage of a push to return business to downtown Kemptville.

Old Town BIA Executive Director John Barclay says there has been a significant revival over the last year and half, with the amount of commercial real estate available shrinking. Businesses interested in the program can get up to five months’ rent in a commercial space for half the market value, marketing support and mentorship from local entrepreneurs.

Ideas like pop-up shops can bring building owners and those looking to launch businesses together according to Old Town BIA Chair Deb Wilson. She thinks it may actually be more worthwhile because the partnership is with local businesses who are invested in the downtown’s future.

Entrepreneurs looking to apply for the program can find more information here. { }
