One man missing and presumed drowned in Ottawa River

The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a possible drowning that happened just before 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Two men in their early twenties had been boating on the Ottawa River near Britannia Beach, when they were swept into the Deschenes Rapids and capsized. One man was rescued by members of the Gatineau Police Service, while the other man has not been located and is presumed drowned. An extensive water and ground search was conducted by the Ottawa Police Service, which involved their Marine Dive and Trail Unit and Emergency Services Unit, as well as assistance from the Water Rescue Unit of the Ottawa Fire Department. Foul play is not suspected, and the names of the parties are being withheld at this time. A green and yellow “Seahawk” inflatable dinghy that was used by the parties was also not recovered during the search, and may be somewhere east of Deschenes Rapids. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service at 613-236-1222 ext. 2666.
