Councillor Doreen O’Sullivan talks nursing struggles for International Nurses Day

“I think it’s a very worthy, honourable profession, and I’m pleased to have been part of it for a very long time.”

That’s Councillor Doreen O’Sullivan talking about her career as a registered nurse.

May 12th is International Nurses Day, an annual event to celebrate the work nurses do, and Moose FM spoke with O’Sullivan to get her perspective on the struggles nurses have faced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I know many who chose to not go and live at home during that time,” she says, “because they were very worried about bringing COVID back home to their families.”

She says it was a very frightening time for anyone working in a hospital or in healthcare.

“Nurses and physicians who took care of patients who were intubated and on respirators,” she adds, “or initially undiagnosed, were at a much greater risk, and it would have been a very frightening time for them and their families.”

O’Sullivan wishes all nurses in North Grenville and beyond a happy International Nurses Day and urges them to be proud of the good work that they do.
