North Grenville raising flag, unveiling mural on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The Municipality of North Grenville is making plans to honour victims of the residential school system.

Corporate Media Relations Officer Jill Sturdy says the municipality is hosting a flag raising ceremony on Friday, September 30th, to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“In addition to the flag raising ceremony,” Sturdy also adds, “there will be an unveiling of a new mural created by local Indigenous artist Finian Paibomesai.”

The federal holiday, first celebrated last year, is meant to recognize the Indigenous survivors and victims of residential schools. A similar ceremony was held last year.

Sturdy also says North Grenville’s Municipal Office will be closing on the 30th to mark the occasion.

“Arenas will remain open and there is no change to the garbage, recycling and organic collection,” she explains. “As a result of the office closure, tax payments will be accepted on Monday, October 3rd with no penalty.”

If you want to attend the ceremony, it’s happening outside the Municipal Centre at noon on the 30th.
