Rideau Valley Conservation Authority: “Mother nature went easy” this spring

According to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, this year’s flood season saw significantly lower peak water flows in our region compared to the past.

“Mother Nature went easy on the Rideau Valley and Ottawa Valley watersheds this spring,” the organization’s May-June newsletter reads, “with a slow snowmelt and normal precipitation allowing the freshet to spread evenly over March, April and May.”

The letter states Rideau River flows peaked on March 26th, while Ottawa River flows peaked on April 30th, at nearly half the levels of the record-breaking 2019 floods. That flooding saw Canadian Armed Forces soldiers deployed to help volunteers deal with the damages.
