Following some complaints, Grenville OPP is reminding people that wheelchairs and mobility scooters have the right to use the roadways when necessary.
Police say that assistive devices are not legislated like bicycles or E-bikes, and those that use them have the same rights as pedestrians. In many areas of the Grenville County area, many places do not have sidewalks, and mobility scooters and wheelchairs are recommended to stay as close to the side of the road as possible. They should also use a sidewalk as soon as one is available, and follow pedestrian rules when using crosswalks.
They also remind drivers that wheels on mobility devices aren’t meant to be used on gravel or sand. With spring conditions present, they remind motorists that the extra sand and dirt on the road may cause problems for those using assistive devices.
