UCDSB teacher Bill Montgomery receives national Indigenous Education Award

“It is a privilege to participate in our Indigenous students’ journey of self-discovery.”

That’s Bill Montgomery, an Indigenous Education System Support Teacher with the Upper Canada District School Board. Montgomery is the recipient of the Indspire Guiding the Journey: Indigenous Education Award in Leadership, a national award that honors teachers for expanding Indigenous education in their community.

Montgomery, a member of BC’s First Nation of Haida Gwaii, says he’s pleased about the way Indigneous education is developing within the UCDSB. “We are more than art; our beliefs and traditions have value,” Montgomery says. “It is so heartwarming to see this sentiment growing so rapidly within our board.”

This is the second year in a row that a member of the board has been presented with this award. Last year’s award went to the UCDSB’s Principal of Indigenous Education, Gail Brant-Terry.
