Spencerville Agricultural Society Encouraging Residents To Take Part In Mammoth Pumpkin Competition

Plans are underway for the 166th Annual Spencerville Fair.

The Spencerville Agricultural Society is working with the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit in hopes the event can be held in person this year in some capacity.

Executive Director with the Agricultural Society Eric Connell says while an in-person celebration would be ideal, it’s looking like it will be another year of celebrating virtually.

“Unfortunately with the lockdown, we aren’t able to see a future where we can hold an in-person fair, but hopefully come September, there will be enough vaccinations that we’re able to have some kind of in-person event at the fairgrounds,” Connell said.

In the meantime, Connell says they are holding monthly meetings and discussing what they can and can’t do for this year.

Every year, the fair hosts a Mammoth Pumpkin Competition, which pits pumpkin growers against each other to see who can grow the biggest one.

The Agricultural Society is selling the seeds from last year’s Mammoth Pumpkin for $5 – which are currently on sale at Clearly Feed and Seed in Spencerville, and Saunders Country Garden Center in Kemptville.

Connell says the competition features junior and senior classes, with prizes available for the biggest pumpkins.

“Last year, we had a pumpkin that grew up to 566 pounds, and the contest is really just to spend the summer interested in planting and agriculture, tending to your pumpkin, and trying to get it as big as possible,” Connell said.
