The Grenville County OPP had a busy week on the roads for Canada Road Safety Week.
From May 18-24, 152 charges were laid, with most of them being related to speeding, which continues to be one of the leading factors in deaths on OPP-patrolled roads.
OPP Constable Dave Holmes says those numbers indicate that many motorists are not following the rules of the road.
“Enforcement is not our go-to when it comes to traffic stops,” Holmes said. “We always try to remain highly visible on our roadways, and when we can, provide education to the public.”
Holmes adds that some of the other charges laid included not wearing seatbelts, failing to yield to traffic, and careless driving.
On Friday, the driver of a tractor-trailer was charged after he was found travelling southbound on Highway 416 in the northbound lanes.
Following the week, Holmes says it seems like some motorists are not taking road safety seriously.
“It’s not always the driver who’s committing the infraction who’s impacted but it’s the other people, the innocent drivers on the road who are involved in these collisions,” Holmes said. “It’s not fair to them that some don’t take it as seriously as they should.”
