Language Express Encourages Parents To Check Out New Communication Checkup

The pandemic is not keeping kids from making progress in their speech and language development.

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is letting parents know about the Language Express Communication Checkup, which aims at helping kids develop their speaking ability.

Coordinator for Language Express Catherine Robinson says early intervention is more important now than ever.

“Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, they have fewer opportunities to interact with people,” Robinson said. “This can affect their communication development. These kids learn through play, talking, and interacting with other people.”

The checkup mostly educates and coaches parents as they interact with their kids, and allows them to be at the forefront of their child’s speech development.

Robinson says it also helps rewire a child’s brain when they are very small.

“A lot of our role is parent education and parent coaching,” she said. “Because the kids we work with are so young, we’re really working with their parents. Our goal is to give parents the strategies they need to help their kids do well.”

Robinson encourages all parents to complete the Communication Checkup every 6 months starting at 6 months of age.

She says this will make it easier for parents to check that their child’s development is on track.

“This is for kids from 6-months-to-4-years of age, and there’s a different set of questions for each age level,” Robinson said. “It includes questions about speech, language, global development and includes red flags for autism spectrum disorder.”
