As COVID-19 Cases Increase So May Deaths, Dr. Stewart

The Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Paula Stewart is reminding people that as the case count rises, so too will the death toll, “With an increase in the number of people with COVID comes an increase in people who may develop serious disease and die.”

Stewart says variants can also contribute to more serious consequences, “The presence of the COVID variants increases the risk that more people become infected, and it can cause more serious disease.”

As of Wednesday, the health unit is reporting 133 active cases of COVID-19, with 54 of those cases in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.

There have been three deaths in three days bringing the death toll in the region to 57 since the pandemic began.

According to the health unit data, there are eight people in hospital with COVID-19, with three in the Intensive Care, and two on ventilators.

Out of 39 cases reported last week, 13 of them were listed as variants of concern.
