Kemptville 73’s Head Into Shortened Season With Playoff Aspirations

After over a two-month break – the Kemptville 73s are back on the ice.

The squad took part in their first game action this past weekend since December 18th, as they took on the Brockville Braves for a doubleheader of exhibition games.

On Friday, the 73’s fell by a score of 7-2, and then on Saturday they lost again by a score of 4-3.

While it wasn’t the best start for his team, Head Coach Jason York says it’s a bittersweet feeling to have the boys playing hockey again.

“We’re just getting back in shape after being off for roughly two months,” York said. “So, we’re just getting back to the swing of things. The main thing is that the kids are back in a routine, doing something they love and it’s just great to see some smiling faces and kids back to doing what they love to do.”

The losses dropped Kemptville’s preseason record to 2-and-5, but York is not stressing too much about what the standings show.

He feels confident the squad will find ways to bounce back this weekend, with another doubleheader on tap against Brockville.

“At the end of the day, the team that works harder usually always wins, and I thought Brockville did that in game one. Game two was a toss-up, so I think it’s just the kids realizing you can’t just strap on your skates and expect to win. The other team wants to win just as badly as you.”

Looking ahead to the season, York expects the team to push for playoff contention this year.

However, he says that’s not his main objective as coach.

“For us the expectations are, every game we get better,” York added. “Build up and build up, and hopefully we’re able to get a playoff spot, and by the time that comes around, we hit our full stride. But for me the goal is always trying to get kids to the next level and that’s what we are trying to do.”

Puck drop for Friday’s game is 7:30 p.m. at the Brockville Memorial Centre.

Saturday’s game takes place at 8:45 p.m. at the North Grenville Municipal Centre.
