Merrick Prep Offering Five Scholarships To Local Students

Merrick Preparatory School is looking to open its doors to more local students next fall.

Following a challenging 2020, the school has announced it will be offering five full scholarships to students in surrounding communities entering grade 9 for the 2021-22 school year in September.

With their penchant for international students, Headmaster Kevin Farrell says the school is looking to provide an international experience for local students.

“What we wanted to do is invite and encourage local day students to come and get an education here at Merrick Prep, and the cost for many is prohibitive,” Farrell said. “We value Merrickville, we value the local community, and we want our international students but also our local students to have an experience of a true international education.”

Farrell says the application process is fairly straightforward.

Applicants will take part in an interview, an entrance exam and be expected to complete a personal profile outlining what they hope to gain from the scholarship opportunity.

Farrell adds it’s their hope that both international and local students will benefit from this.

“International students want to understand Canadian culture, they want to understand students, pedagogy, curriculum, they want to go to University here, they want to contribute and grow in Canada and make it a better place to be for all of us,” Farrell said. “And for our Canadian students that might come as day students, they have an amazing opportunity to be among some of the best and brightest kids from around the world.”

In addition to the scholarships, Merrick Prep will be offering more funding in scholarships and bursaries for day students in Grades 9-12.

Farrell says this opens the door for more students to take advantage of what the school offers.

“Even if they don’t win one of the grade 9 full scholarships, there’s still $40,000 allocated for bursaries for students who’d like to explore the opportunity and would like to come here, whether it be grade 9 through to grade 12,” Farrell said. “We’re hoping to have a minimum of ten local day students here at Merrick Prep starting in September.”
