Dundas Manor Announces First Doses Of COVID-19 Vaccinations For Residents

Residents and staff at a Winchester nursing home have received their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

On Friday, COVID-19 vaccines arrived at Dundas Manor, with 312 doses given to residents, staff, physicians, and essential caregivers as part of the home’s ‘Operation Protect’.

Home Administrator Susan Poirier says it was an emotional week leading up to the clinic.

“We are sharing tears of happiness and gratitude to the Eastern Ontario Health Unit for their assistance in bringing the vaccine to our home,” she said. “Thank you to the paramedics, nurses and our entire Dundas Manor family for your commitment and support of one another.”

Cornwall-SDG paramedics and nurses from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit helped staff give the shots.

The first shot for residents went to Bill Wagoner 

“It just felt like a little mosquito bite,” Wagoner said. “No problem. One quick needle means a life of protection.”

Registered Practical Nurse Spencer Hayward was the first staff member to get their shot, while his mom Sharon, another PSW at the home, was second in line.

“I was very excited to get the vaccine today and encourage everyone to get it when able,” he said.

Although the first dose has been given, all safety protocols such as wearing masks, the use of personal protective equipment, and visitor restrictions are still in place. 

Meanwhile. staff and essential caregivers will continue to be tested for COVID-19 on a weekly basis.
