House Of Lazarus Food Bank Sees Sizable Usage Increase Over Holidays

The team at House of Lazarus is celebrating a very successful holiday season.

All through last month, the non-profit organization was working hard to ensure no one in the community would go hungry through its Christmas Program.

Client Service Manager Kim Merkley says in December alone, they saw a 31 per cent increase in usage at their food bank.

“We gave out a little over 3000 pounds of extra food this year from last year,” Merkley said. “I thank all the small businesses, large businesses, the schools, the grocery stores – it’s just been phenomenal to see the community’s support.”

Merkley says despite the pandemic, it was wonderful to see the community dig deep and give back to those who need it most.

She says due to the lockdown, they are unable to keep their doors open but they are still accepting clients and taking food donations.

“Right now, we’re just seeing people by appointment, but by all means, whoever is in need – we’re here to help,” Merkley said. “I’d just ask the community to continue to support us with the food, with donations and just continue doing what you are doing because without the community, we can’t function.”

In addition to donations to the food bank, HOL along with Community Food Share, and Winchester BMR saw fire logs delivered to 30 homes across the community.

If you’re in need of an emergency food hamper, you can contact HOL at 613-612-3830
