ODA reminding people to take care of teeth as Halloween creeps up

The Ontario Dental Association (ODA) is reminding people to take care of their mouth as Halloween is coming up.

The ODA says this care is especially important during the pandemic because dental health is a key part of overall health and well-being.

If you’re going to be indulging in sugary and salty treats, here are some tips from the ODA to prevent tooth decay:

  • Nuts are a healthy snack alternative and eating cheese before treats can leave a vitamin-rich film on the teeth that helps protect against sugary candies.
  • Chocolate bars are one of the more tooth-friendly treats, it has to be plain chocolate so it dissolves quickly in your mouth.
  • Chewy sweets like caramels, licorice and dried fruit can get stuck to and in between your teeth, causing cavities and can pull out fillings.
  • Salty treats like pretzels, potato and corn chips can also get lodged in your teeth and breakdown into cavity-causing sugars.
  • Hard candies including jaw breakers, lollipops and mints soak your teeth in sugar as they dissolve and can also crack your teeth or ruin braces if you bite down on them.
  • Water is the best way to neutralize all the sugars and acids in your mouth, so swish after eating treats.
  • Chewing sugar-free gum is also great at getting saliva going and washing away excess sugar and debris on your teeth.
