North Grenville looking to reduce percentage of organic waste going to landfill

North Grenville is looking to lower their percentage of organic waste going to landfill.

When the municipality announced changes were coming to the waste management program in February, it was noted that right now over 50-percent of organic waste in North Grenville goes to landfill.

Councillor John Barclay says in February they will be starting a green bin program. They’ve found that around half of the waste that was put out for collection was organic. He says they have found a processor that serves the City of Ottawa for organic waste, which North Grenville will be using. Barclay says that means hopefully over next year, more and more residents will be putting their organic waste in green bins. There is no cost to use the green bin program for residents and bag tags will be used for garbage collection, according to Barclay. The municipality is expecting the province to ban organic waste at landfills eventually.

Barclay explains they will continue to do waste audits by randomly picking up people’s garbage and looking at what’s in it. He says they hope the percentage of organic waste going to landfill goes down from over 50-percent to 30-percent. Barclay notes that may take a year or two.
