Changes coming to North Grenville Waste Management program

North Grenville Council has made changes to the waste management program in the municipality.

The changes to residential waste collection will go into effect on February 1st, 2021.

The changes include:

  • biweekly solid waste collection
  • weekly source separated organics collection (food waste, wood chips, kitty litter & dog waste, paper food bags and used pizza boxes)
  • the introduction of curbside leaf and yard waste collection and bulky item collection (up to 4 events per year).

The municipality says recycling will remain the same.

Mayor Nancy Peckford says the new program will provide residents with additional and enhanced services and also allows the municipality to efficiently respond to expected changes from the province, which will ban food waste from landfills in the foreseeable future.

A new bag tag fee structure will also come into effect in February 2021.

The new charges include:

  • an updated solid waste bag tag fee of $2.75
  • a bulky item bag tag fee of $12.50
  • a leaf and yard waste bag tag fee $1.00

Existing bag tags will be accepted until the new waste program is fully implemented in 2021. A transition program will be set up in the new year to address the remaining bag tags, according to North Grenville.

The municipality says the new bag tag fees are designed to offset the cost of the enhanced waste management program, including organics collection, yard waste and bulky items resulting in no additional tax dollars being utilized for the program.

Councillor Kristin Strackerjan says over 50-percent of organic waste in North Grenville currently goes to landfill.

“The Municipality recognizes an enhanced waste management program will be beneficial for many urban and rural residents.”

Emterra Environmental will be the new waste management contractor beginning in November. They will be responsible for all aspects of North Grenville’s curbside program, including waste, recycling, and separated organics, according to the municipality.
