Health unit releases open letter on sports and recreation during COVID-19

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is encouraging everyone to be kind, supportive, decisive and united in how we fight COVID-19.

In an open letter, the health unit says sports and recreation is essential for our well-being. The health unit says there is a desire for activities to look and feel “normal” especially with indoor sports starting.

“Over this sporting/recreation season, with the presence of COVID-19, we call on everyone to accept a new “normal.””

The health unit highlights two points from the provincial legislation for areas in Stage 3.

The first point is indoor facilities can’t have more than 50 spectators at one time and must allow all spectators to be physically distanced at least two metres at all times. The owner/operator of the facility can choose to allow fewer spectators than 50.

The second point is that a league can’t have more than 50 players. Teams in a league can’t play against a team from outside their league. For example, two teams of 25 players each can only play against each other.

The health unit says the main goal of both rules is to limit close contact between many people.

“Playing outside, with fewer people, lots of space and for a shorter time will decrease the risk of COVID-19 transmission.”

The health unit says everyone needs to continue being COVID-smart and stay at least two metres away from people you don’t live with.
