Health unit advising families to celebrate Thanksgiving with caution

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is reminding the public to stay safe when celebrating Thanksgiving.

Doctor Paula Stewart, Medical Officer of Health, says we need to be even more attentive as we’re seeing an increase in the number of people in our community, and around us, with COVID-19. Stewart says we can be creative and find new ways to connect with friends and family.

The health unit’s suggestions to celebrate safely include: celebrating within the household, limit the time of visits, keep people six feet apart, consider outdoor celebrations or virtual celebrations.

The provincial government is encouraging people to stay in their household now instead of expanding close contact to their Social Circle previously.

Ontario also reduced the number of people allowed at social gatherings, where people maintain a distance of six feet. Under the rules, indoor gatherings of up to 10 people and outdoor gatherings of up to 25 people are permitted.

The health unit also says family members and students should carefully consider the risks of COVID-19 if they plan to come home or visit other areas for the holiday.
