New Prison being built in Kemptville

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement on Thursday in Brockville.  The new Greater Ottawa Correctional Complex will be built on government-owned land in town.

The Brockville Jail will be replaced as it is the oldest prison in Ontario.  The new facility will help to reduce overcrowding.

The St. Lawrence Valley Correctional Treatment Centre and the Quinte Detention Centre will be upgraded to allow for mental health supports for female prisoners.  The Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre will also be renovated.

“Our frontline correctional staff have been absolute champions throughout the pandemic, putting their communities first and keeping all of us safe,” said Premier Ford. “By making these important investments in Eastern Ontario, we will upgrade our corrections infrastructure, better protect our correctional officers, and contribute to our economic recovery through these new construction projects.”

There are approximately 6,100 adults incarcerated in correctional facilities throughout the province.
