Funding for County Road 43 expansion announced

North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford says after years of waiting it’s an exciting day with the announcement of federal/provincial funding for the expansion of County Road 43.

Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark says all of the funding is now in place to allow the $9.9 million County Road 43 expansion to proceed. The plan is to expand it from two lanes to four from the 416 entry into Kemptville to the section of County Road 43-44, according to Peckford.

Clark made the announcement on behalf of Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Laurie Scott and was joined by Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MP Michael Barrett, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Warden Pat Sayeau and Mayor Nancy Peckford.

The final piece of the funding was announced by the federal government after the province had nominated the project under the Rural and Northern Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and committed its $3.3 million share last July, according to Clark.

Peckford says with the crucial upgrade, there will be a multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, lighting and safe pedestrian crossings. She says the overall cost is about $30 million.

County Road 43 runs through the heart of Kemptville and serves as a major regional route in Eastern Ontario. On behalf of residents and businesses in North Grenville, we are thrilled to move this important project forward with crucial contributions from both the provincial and federal governments. In particular, I would like to thank MPP Steve Clark and Minister Laurie Scott for their strong commitment to the rehabilitation and expansion of County Road 43 in North Grenville.”

Peckford says they’re looking to begin the project next year with the bridge expansion possibly starting first. She says the lighting elements of the road will be included on the bridge as well.
