Average flooding expected this spring: RVCA

Current conditions are favourable for a slow snow melt, according to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA). The organization issued a flood outlook statement yesterday.

The RVCA says the winter of 2019/20 was warmer than normal, with almost average snowfall amounts. Current conditions at several RVCA and Parks Canada snow course sites are showing above average water content amounts in the snow.

The RVCA noted the short-term forecast indicates daytime high temperatures above zero and below zero at night, which is favourable for ongoing melting. Much of the snow is expected to melt with the precipitation this week, which will bring water levels up and increase flows over the coming weeks.

The RVCA says this gradual process would result in average flooding this spring across the watershed with flooding limited to low lying areas along all waterways. Significant rain events greater than 25 mm and/or major temperature increases could influence actual flood conditions through March and into April.

Water levels on lakes and flows in the streams are currently close to normal for this time of year.

The RVCA says with the changing water levels, ice cover on lakes, ditches, local streams and rivers will continue to be unstable. People are reminded to exercise extreme caution near local waterbodies.
