Online scams happening daily: OPP

Grenville County OPP says online scams are happening every day in the area.

Scam artists can contact you by text message, social media, email or phone.

The OPP says people should watch for messages saying that you owe money, are being awarded money, have an inheritance, or that your bank account has been compromised.

Scammers will tell victims that they’ve won the lottery, overpaid for something, owe back taxes to Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) or that their SIN card is corrupted.

The OPP says there are tips to keep in mind to avoid becoming a victim; if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is, money that you are asked to send will not find its way back to you, lottery administrators never charge fees to deliver your prize and the CRA doesn’t ask for personal information over the phone or payment in the form of Amazon or iTunes gift cards.

If you suspect someone is trying to scam you, get their details and visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website by clicking here or contact the OPP by calling 1-888-310-1122.
